Hi everyone

Been reading through a couple of threads and I notice that people are saying that on Methotrexate I should stay out of the sun. I have been sunbathing for the last week or so and I am on 12.5 mg of Methotrexate as well as Humira. Should I stop sunbathing??

In a word, YES. Sun and MTX are not a good mix

under the umbrella for me,

10mg Methotrexate, Hydroxy which i am cutting down on and hope to be off in 3 months and Humira,

i can feel the sun burning quite quickly now.

i do sit out when the sun isn't at it's hottest, but as soon as i feel it burning then back into the shade, it was lovely yesterday evening with a gentle breeze,

Methotrexate and sun definitely do not mix. However, can I add a word of caution. I have kept completely out of the sun for the last couple of years and have also been using Factor 50 all year on my face because of Rosecea. I now have a serious Vitamin D deficiency. I have had to start taking Vitamin D tablets at quite a strong dose. I have been out in the sun for 5-10 minutes at a time a couple of times a day walking around the garden and the bone pain I was experiencing (even the soles of my feet hurt) is definitely getting better.

So whilst I don't think you should be lying out in it, make sure you do not entirely cut yourself off from a source which does help our bodies.

Take care

Jackie

What actually happens when they do mix? I haven't given it a thought and have been doing the garden etc and been outside lots in the past few days . Used factor 30 to start with but there have been times when I hadn't meant to be out long and had no sunscreen on. Am I just lucky that nothings happened>
Sorry but I love the sun it really cheers me, although at the moment it is a little too warm.
Best to all

I'm really pale and have always burned easily, so am used to slathering myself in factor 50. Now I inject 20mg methotrexate weekly though, I burn quickly even through the factor 50. I try covering up as much as possible, so far it seems the best solution.

We do need vitamin D, so not sitting in the sun at all isn't a great idea in my opinion. If you sit for a SHORT time early in the morning and on an evening this will really help your vit D levels. It's just about being cautious, I wouldn't sit in the sun during the hottest times of the day but also I wouldn't cut yourself off from it completely.

Really interesting because I wasn't aware of photosensitivity until I read this thread.
I've been out in the sun burning quickly......sun cream on now.

Hi everyone

Thanks for your answers. I must admit I had no idea that there was a problem with methotrexate and the sun and have sunbathed over the last couple of weeks with no side effects and I now have a great tan!!!! Will be much more careful in the future.

Hi all,

I think again this is a case of knowing your own body, disease limitations and reactions. I have been on quite high doses of methotrexate for about 15 years now and I do sit in the sun regularly. As others have said some sun is necessary in our lives to promote correct cell renewal and production of Vitamin D. Rebecca is right and being sensible is key. Plenty of high factor cream applied often will stop the incidence of burning. Increase your exposure to sun slowly so that your body can adjust to changes.

I have been taking Methotrexate for 12 years. With regard to the sun I think it is the same as a lot of things, comom sense and everything in moderation. We need the sun for vitamin D but too much will do us harm. It is such a shame to not enjoy being outside in the lovely weather, as it seems to make me feel better and certainly lifts your spirits.

Be careful, but enjoy it while it lasts

Best wishes to all
Lisa
